Welcome to
Sundials of the World! UNITED KINGDOM
|
The analemmatic sundial shown on this
page is located at Downe House School near Newbury,
Berkshire, UK. It
is at Latitude 51.3° N; Longitude 1.3º W. Peter Ransom, a teacher, was
responsible for laying out this dial to ensure accurate placement of
the hour and date tiles.
|
The
Meridian for this dial was set out Easter 2002 and all the
positions of central date scale and hour markers were marked
by pegs at that time.
The
major axis of the dial, positioned east-west, is approximately
8 metres.
After
all the tiles were positioned they were set into place in
concrete bases.
The
sundial was officially opened in July 2002.
|
|
The
tiles were made by a Year 9 class (13/14 year old) of girls
under the supervision of Ms. Judy Powell during the 1999/2000
academic year.
The tiles are
made of ceramic and as a result of shrinkage during the firing
process some effort was required in laying them out correctly.
Each of the 26
tiles making up the date scale and hour markers was hand
crafted by the students. Each tile is a work of art and all
the students should be very proud of the accomplishment. This
is a beautiful sundial! |
