Mottoes Motto: a sentence, phrase or verse inscribed on a dial expressing an appropriate sentiment. Mottoes started appearing on dials in the late 16th century but were particularly popular in the 19th century. Mottoes are a very popular inclusion on sundials. A motto should in some way make reference to time and perhaps to the specific location or purpose of the dial. When including a motto try to come up with an original as that will make the dial special to you or the person receiving the dial. There are many existing mottoes that you can also use.
