The
polished granite tiles were supplied by a local
quarry, Cold Spring Granite Canada Ltd. The
quarry is located very close to Pinawa.
Fortunately, it is also located very close to
Flying Pigment Design Studio which is where they
had to be transported. Pictured above
is Al Abraham, an LGD of Pinawa employee, who
made all four trips required to move the granite
tiles. The town provided the use of their 3/4 ton
truck and 24 foot trailer.
There
are very few pieces that can be handled manually.
We were fortunate that Gilbert Osis, owner of
Osis Do-It Centre in Lac du Bonnet, donated the
use of one of his fork lifts for us to use for
unloading the trailer. Al Abraham was the
operator. We did not use the lift seen mounted in
the box of the truck although we did give it a
momentary consideration.
Each
piece of granite was on a wooden pallet. Once
unloaded at FPDS, we used a pallet jack to move
the pieces around on the concrete floor in their
building.
The
next step is for the artists of FPDS to place
rubber masking on the granite tiles. This mask
protects the areas of granite which are to remain
polished. The exposed areas will be sandblasted.
The result will be the beautiful images
illustrated on the previous page.
