The Sundial Primer - Get "Hooked on Gnomonics"!

On CD

Also includes "The Pinawa Heritage Sundial" and "Sundials of the World" web pages!

Sunny Day!

As you know everything on this web site is free. As anyone who has built a web site knows, there are hundreds of hours invested in the these pages. As well, there are hundreds of hours invested in the CAD drawings necessary for many of the images, sundial kits, templates, etc.. And I am happy to take responsibility for all of it! If you find the information useful consider buying the CD. Although I would like it, the web site won't be around forever.

The CD version of "The Sundial Primer" and "Sunny Day U" contains the following:

  • 167 web pages (hundreds of printed pages) of information about sundials and dialling.
  • 814 images.
  • 590 files that can be downloaded; including PDF, Excel, PowerPoint, QBASIC, CAD DXF and DeltaCad drawing and macro files.

You can browse "The Sundial Primer" and "Sunny Day U" offline any time you like. All the images and files are available to you. Some of the files are in ZIP format but if you go to the "Utilities" page there are links to free UNZIP software.

The CD version of "The Sundial Primer", "Sunny Day U" and the CD bonus files described below contain 2,643 files.  All this information is FREE!

"The Pinawa Heritage Sundial" and "Sundials of the World" add an additional 92 web pages and 376 more images! There's lots of great information available in these pages too! Get a good idea of what is involved in the design and construction of a monumental sundial. Also check out the fundraising activities used to raise money for the project. Perhaps some of these ideas may work for you.

There is a cost for this CD to cover my time to prepare it plus shipping and handling, and it is:

  • $15.00 CAD if you live in Canada.
  • $15.00 USD if you live anywhere else.

This includes shipping costs. Please allow 2 weeks for delivery from the time I receive your request.

I can only accept international money orders or if you want to send it, cash. Please do not send a personal check.

Thank you!

CD Bonus #1:

At The Sundial Primer online there is a 3D Studio file of a sundial that can be found on the "Virtual Sundials" page. If you can view this file you will see a virtual 3-dimensional image of a sundial fashioned after a spaceship. By rotating the image the sundial can be viewed from any angle. On the CD there are 12 additional virtual sundials. Five of these are the sundial kits offered at Sunny Day U and the other seven are sundials from The Sundial Primer. If you require a means of viewing these files you can use a freeware package such as "Anim8or", which is described on the "Virtual Sundials" page.  I have installed the software and viewed all the images with it.

CD Bonus #2:

The CD also contains three sets of "Sun Charts". These charts indicate local apparent or solar time and the files are in pdf format. The first set of sun charts are generated in Cartesian co-ordinates and cover the range of latitudes from 90ºN to 90ºS in increments of 0.5º. As each sun chart covers a  6 month period of the year, two are required for each given latitude. A total of 722 Cartesian co-ordinate sun charts are provided for this range of latitudes. The second set of sun charts are generated in polar co-ordinates and cover the range of latitudes from 79.5ºN to 79.5ºS in increments of 0.5º. Polar sun charts above these latitudes are not provided as the plots are not very clear. Each sun chart covers an entire year. A total of 319 polar sun charts are provided for this range of latitudes. A third set of sun charts for particular locations including the North Pole, South Pole, Arctic Circle, Antarctic Circle, Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn and the Equator are provided as a separate set.

CD Bonus #3:

And that's not all! The CD has a number of images of the "Dialling Buddy". There are 365 pdf files with images of the "Dialling Buddy" set at latitudes in the range from 90ºN to 90ºS in increments of 0.5º. There are a few special ones too. Having a real "Dialling Buddy" is a lot more fun but if you can't make one, for whatever reason, this is the next best thing.

That's over 1400 "Sun Charts" and "Dialling Buddy" images available only on the CD.

The following are samples of the type of files available.

CD Bonus #4:

The CD also contains 31 font files in dxf format and 1 in pdf format. These are designed to be used when building a "human sundial" or an interactive horizontal shadow plane sundial. You can see them all in the "Dialling Guides" section of the site.
