SUNDIALS OF THE WORLD INDEX
Welcome to Sundials of the World!

CANADA

The sundials presented on this page were designed and constructed by Brian Albinson who lives in North Vancouver, British Columbia.

This is an analemmic-equatorial sundial. The dial is engraved for the longitude of Vancouver and some minor latitude adjustment is provided. It is constructed from PVC.

As the dial is corrected for longitude it will indicate zonal solar time when read using the slot as shown here . The gnomon is rotated until the slot is aligned with the sun. To obtain Standard or clock time the correction for the Equation of Time is obtained from the graph and applied to the indicated time.

In this photo the analemma is aligned with the sun and will correct for the Equation of Time.  The sundial indicates Standard or clock time directly. The analemmic gnomon must be constructed with great precision to give an accurate reading.

The dial is also marked to show Daylight Saving Time.

This analemmic gnomon will also provide the date if it has date marks.

Brian is very active in teaching school children about sundials. In particular, he has built a number of analemmatic dials with the help of students.

Brian uses templates for the dial and analemma. The analemma template is shown here. He drives 2.5" high tensile nails through the template holes using a .22 Remington power nailer. This ensures accuracy and a dial can be marked out in about 2 hours.

Brian has installed dials at 4 elementary schools but his goal is to have analemmatic sundials located at all the schools in the North Vancouver area.

We wish him great success in his endeavor.
