The
dial plate of the Pinawa Heritage Sundial is
rectangular, 38.5 ft. wide (east-west) and 40.5ft. long
(north-south). It
consists of three parts, the central medallion,
the inner dial and the outer dial. The central
medallion and the outer dial area are constructed from polished granite tiles with images sandblasted
into the surface of the stone. These icons are an
important feature of the dial as they depict the
history of our region. The inner dial is
constructed of pavers that have been tumbled to
give them an ancient look. The hour lines are
made from used railroad track and the 15 minute
markers are 0.5 inch diameter brass buttons set
into the border pavers of both the inner and
outer dials. The layout of
the hour lines is determined from the latitude
and longitude of the sundial's location. The hour
angles were calculated using a software spreadsheet. A sundial software design
package was also used to determine the hour
lines. The output of this software was then
transferred into a computer aided drafting (CAD)
software package. The hour angles were then
compared to those obtained from the spreadsheet.
The CAD package was used to generate all the
detailed drawings for the project. This included
drawings for the dial plate, the granite tiles,
the gnomon, the track cutting details and the
piles that support the gnomon.
